Jocelyn Brewer is a registered Psychologist Based in Sydney Australia

She works both in NSW public schools (across K -12) and in private practice. Ā
She consults, speaks and writes on issues relating to technology, psychology, and learning.

Jocelyn has over 15 years experience in public education both as a teacher of high school social sciences andĀ as a school counsellor/psychologist.Ā Ā Her 2009 psychology thesis explored the impacts of increasing access toĀ Internet enabled laptops on a cohort of grade 10 boys and the emerging area of Problematic InternetĀ Use (PIU) colloquially known as ā€˜Internet Addictionā€™. You can read it here.

Jocelyn createdĀ Digital Nutrition in 2013Ā ā€“ it's a framework to guide parents and consumersĀ understand the virtual nutritional values of the online media content we consume via apps andĀ games on tablets and screen technology. Ā Digital Nutrition is one of the earliest frameworks using the analogy with food to conceptualise a 'healthy digital diet' (preceded mainly by Daniel Sieberg's The Digital Diet in 2011) - an analogy which is increasingly popular with those working in the space as we come to understand that screen time is not an effective way to consider the impacts of digital devices.

ā€‹Digital Nutrition was awarded the NSW Premierā€™s TeacherĀ Scholarship for Health Education in 2014 and Jocelyn toured the USA in May/June 2015 to investigate work happening in this emerging intersection of digital health and wellbeing. Read about the tour here.

Jocelyn is currently undertaking a Masters of Applied ScienceĀ research project at Sydney Universityā€™s Faculty of Health Sciences which she will complete in 2019. This project will investigate the relationship between soft skills (mindful awareness and self-control) and proneness to problematic use/overuse of smartphones in a sample of over 500 Year 7 students from across NSW public schools.

Jocelyn is trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive BehaviouralĀ Therapy (CBT), and uses a range of creative, practical and dynamic techniques to inspire positiveĀ change. Sheā€™s an accredited ā€˜123 Magic & Emotion Coachingā€˜ and ā€˜Engaging Adolescentsā€˜Ā practitioner.

Jocelyn has a warm, humorous and engaging presentation style, and the ability to put scientificĀ research into practical perspectives. She regularly presents for teachers, psychologist and parents, and appears in the media. Ā Her TEDx talk on Digital Nutrition can be viewed here.
